Frequently Asked Questions

A Naturopathic Doctor in British Columbia must successfully complete a minimum of three years in sciences or liberal arts at an accredited college or university.
A Naturopathic Doctor must graduate from a Naturopathic Medical School accredited by the Council on Medical Education (CNME) with a degree granted as Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine.

Successful completion of the following Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) is required:

- Part I: Biomedical Science (Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Physiology)

- Part II: Core Clinical Science (Botanical Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Lab Diagnosis and Diagnostic Imaging, Nutrition, Pharmacology, Physical and Clinical Diagnosis, Physical Medicine, Psychology, Public Health)

- Part II: Clinical Elective Minor Surgery

- Successful completion of the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia’s examinations is required: Jurisprudence, Oral and Practical Examinations

First appointments are typically one hour long. A thorough case history will be taken. A physical exam and/or lab testing may be done, if indicated. A comprehensive individualized treatment plan will be developed and explained.

MSP does not currently cover Naturopathic treatment, unless you are on premium assistance. Most extended health insurance plans do cover Naturopathic treatment. Please check with your provider to see if you are eligible for coverage.

Naturopathic Doctors in British Columbia have prescriptive authority. Naturopathic Doctors prescribe from Provincial Drug Schedules I, II, and III in accordance with the BC Pharmacy and Drug Scheduling Act and the Federal Controlled and Drug Substances Act and Regulation and the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC) Prescribing Standards, Limits and Conditions.
